A gentler, more natural approach to hair removal

Although sugaring is still relatively unknown compared to traditional waxing, it has been a much-loved treatment at Dante for almost 10 years. Co-owner Terri was one of the first beauty therapists in our area to train in this ancient hair removal technique, and over the years it has become a favourite among clients looking for a gentler, more skin-friendly alternative to waxing.

Whether you have sensitive skin, struggle with ingrown hairs or are simply looking for a more natural method of hair removal, sugaring is a treatment well worth experiencing.

What is Sugaring?

Sugaring is one of the oldest forms of hair removal, with its origins dating back to Ancient Egypt. The paste is made from just three simple ingredients – sugar, lemon juice and water – creating a natural, biodegradable product that removes hair while being kind to the skin.

Unlike traditional wax, the sugar paste is applied at body temperature, making it comfortable to use and eliminating the risk of heat-related irritation or burns.

Why choose Sugaring?

Many of our clients choose sugaring because it offers a gentler experience while still achieving beautifully smooth results.

Some of the benefits include:

  • Ideal for sensitive or easily irritated skin.
  • Applied at body temperature, so there’s no risk of burning the skin.
  • Removes hair as short as 3–5 mm, meaning you don’t have to wait as long between appointments.
  • Made from natural ingredients and suitable for vegans.
  • Gently exfoliates the skin during treatment, leaving it feeling soft and refreshed.
  • Helps reduce hair breakage, which can minimise the likelihood of ingrown hairs.
  • The sugar paste adheres primarily to the hair rather than the surrounding skin, often resulting in less irritation and greater comfort than traditional waxing.

At Dante, we love that sugaring not only delivers beautiful results but also supports healthier skin over time.

Sugaring FAQ

This varies from person to person and depends on whether you’ve been shaving, waxing or having regular sugaring treatments.

Hair grows in three natural stages:

  1. Anagen (active growth): This is when the hair is actively growing and attached to the root. Removing hair during this stage generally provides the longest-lasting results.
  2. Catagen (transition stage): The hair begins to separate from the follicle as growth slows.
  3. Telogen (resting stage): The hair is resting before naturally shedding and making way for new growth.

Because not every hair is in the same growth stage at the time of your appointment, it’s completely normal to notice some regrowth before others. As you continue with regular sugaring appointments, more hairs begin to grow in a similar cycle, resulting in smoother skin for longer and finer, softer regrowth.

Making the switch is easier than you might think.

For your first three appointments, we usually recommend scheduling your treatments a little closer together than you would with waxing. Because sugaring can effectively remove shorter hairs, we’re able to target new growth sooner and gradually encourage a more consistent hair growth cycle.

Many of our long-term sugaring clients notice that their hair becomes finer, softer and less dense over time. Some areas may even experience significantly reduced hair growth, allowing you to extend the time between appointments compared with traditional waxing.

Any treatment that removes hair from the root will involve some level of discomfort, regardless of the method used. However, many of our clients tell us they find sugaring noticeably more comfortable than waxing.

This is because the sugar paste primarily grips the hair rather than adhering firmly to the surrounding skin, which can help reduce unnecessary irritation during the treatment.

In fact, we’ve had more than a few clients become so relaxed during their appointment that they’ve nearly drifted off to
